Should you run your company in your own state?
Where to run your remote service business
Does location matter?
Running a remote service-based business can offer both flexibility and unique opportunities. That being said, I’ve seen a big split between businesses run remotely in the owner’s home state and businesses run in another location.
Personally, I run a remote service-based business in the county where I live. Through this, I have experienced the benefits of having a local presence and familiarity with the community. When needed, I am also able to be physically present for any issues that arise.
Additionally, running the business locally can provide a better understanding of the local market and its specific needs. I am more attuned to the local culture, trends, and preferences, which gives me an edge in tailoring my services to meet those demands. An example is that the location I am in Florida has a large equestrian community for half of the year. If I didn’t live in this area, I would have had no idea, but due to my being present, I was able to run a profitable FB campaign targeted at the equestrian community leaving Florida and needing their homes deep cleaned.
On the other hand, running a remote service-based business in another state can provide a variety of benefits depending on where you live. When looking for a location to start a business, people should consider things like taxes, average pricing, and overall demand.
First and foremost, I’d try to find a state that doesn’t charge taxes on the service you provide. In Florida where I run my company, we don’t have tax on residential cleaning services, yet we do on commercial jobs. As a result, I try to stay away from commercial jobs to avoid having to deal with them later on. I believe that Texas offers this same benefit.
In regards to pricing, operating in big cities or more affluent areas gives you the opportunity to set your prices higher. If you live in a less affluent area, I’d suggest targeting an area where you can charge much more than you can charge in your hometown.
When looking into demand, I’d use Google Trends. You can search how often the service you would like to offer is searched in the area you are looking for. If you are planning on running your business in a different area than your hometown, I would do a lot of market research and try to target a wealthy neighborhood or county with high search volume and low competition.
Honestly, I didn’t really know what to write about this week but I have found through growing in public on Twitter that there is a large contrast between where people run their businesses in their hometown or a different area. Through this, I have thought about the different benefits of each and have come to the decision that I am extremely happy I live in Florida. Being where I am, I get both the tax benefits and the demand despite a high level of competition. As a result, I’ve continually been able to grow at a fast pace and will look to keep this pace up in the future.

This was the worst week I have had in months but that was expected as I took a break for memorial day and last weekend had some random stuff come up which prevented me from taking calls.
